Great Barrier Reef | Australia's Great Natural Wonder

One of the seven wonders of the natural world and Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is known as the world’s largest coral reef, blessed with a vast and spectacular ecosystem. This world heritage listed area is recognised as the largest living structure on the planet, is larger than the Great Wall of China and bigger than Italy - big it’s literally visible from space.

The reef comprises an abundance of marine life almost 3000 individual reefs, about 400 types of corals, 1,500 species of fish, 4,000 types of molluscs and 980 scenic tropical islands with some of the world’s most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches.

Being a global icon, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the world’s most sought-after tourist destinations. There's so much to see here, and so many experiences to enjoy including scuba diving, snorkelling, bare boats (self-sail), aircraft or helicopter tours, semi-submersibles and educational trips, glass-bottomed boat viewing, cruise ship tours, swimming with dolphins, and whale watching.

The Great Barrier Reef’s water environment is formed by the surface water layer of the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The reef waters are generally crystal-clear and show little seasonal variation where the surface-water temperature is high, ranging from 70 to 100 °F (21 to 38 °C) enabling the corals to flourish (they cannot exist where the average temperature falls below 70 °F [21 °C]).
The weather over the Great Barrier Reef fluctuates because of the long length of the reef. Spanning 2300 km of Australia’s northeast coast, most of the reef is in tropical and sub-tropical regions. While the northern part of the reef is in a tropical climate with hot, wet summers, rainy and humid. Whereas the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef is sub-tropical having milder summers and much less humidity.
