The town was originally called Hambledon because of its proximity to the Hambledon plantation and mill. In 1911 the name was changed to Edmonton after a village in England. Even though this new name has been in place for almost 100 years, the name Hambledon remains enshrined in a number of local institutions such as the local school (Hambledon State School), hotel (Hambledon Hotel) and mill (Hambledon Mill - now closed).
Located closer to the main city of Cairns (13 kilometres south), Edmonton is similar to Gordonvale in that it was also originally established as a sugar milling town, however has now become a suburb of the larger city of Cairns.
Sugarworld Shopping Centre is a Neighbourhood Centre anchored by a Coles supermarket and 12+ speciality stores, located in Edmonton, a suburb 16km south of Cairns.
Isabella State School is located 12 km south of Cairns at the foot of Isley Hills in the township of Edmonton. The name was approved after a process of community consultation. Isabella was the wife of Thomas Swallow who established the Hambledon Sugar Mill in the local area and crushed its first cane in 1883. Thomas and Isabella resided at Hambledon House and became renowned for their hospitality. It is the warmth and welcoming spirit of Isabella (and her husband) that will feature and be nurtured at our new school. A waterfall in the local area is named Isabella Falls. Isabella is also the name given to a road in the local area and a housing estate. One of the other local state primary schools close by is Hambledon State School.
